Box Stallion Enclosure Pinot Noir 2006

The Mornington Peninsula is one of only a few areas in Australia suitable to produce fine Pinots. Rich black cherries and plums on the nose with a hint of mint, chary vanilla oak, and a savoury palate with a full body, makes our Enclosure Pinot Noir very special. Our 2002 vintage was awarded a Gold Medal and the Jean Hameury Trophy for “Best Pinot Noir of Show” at Le Concours des Vins Du Victoria 2003 and was voted in the top three Pinots Australia wide by the Winestate Magazine’s tasting panel in a national taste-off.

Winemaker Notes:
As is our practice for our Pinots, we have kept the parcels of wine that make the Box Stallion Enclosure Pinot separate through fermentation, initial stabilization and maturation, only bringing them together during the final stages of winemaking. This allows us to bring out the best characters possible in each individual batch using strict temperature control, malolactic fermentation and individual hand finishing. The 2003 Enclosure, our reserve wine, is blended from carefully selected portions of these parcels to produce a wine of exceptional balance and character.

Viticulture Notes:
All our Pinot Noir vines grow on the Scott Henry trellis system, allowing us to divide the canopy into two curtains to gain the maximum direct and reflected light penetration into the fruit zone. The resulting even ripeness is expressed in the high quality of the fruit harvested. Box Stallion grows five clones of Pinot Noir, each with different characters giving good complexity to the final wine.

Box Stallion

Box Stallion is one of the Mornington Peninsula's most innovative winemakers. From its beginnings in 1997 it was destined to sit apart from the traditional producers of this region, by virtue of the wide and exotic range of grape varieties planted.

The name Box Stallion is a blend of contemporary branding and a connotation to the property's immediate past history as a premium thoroughbred nursery and racing stable. Our equine connection is still evident in the form of our 'Red Barn' Cellar Door, the 'Sandroll' Rotunda, and fine bloodstock that grace the pastures of our neighbour, leading thoroughbred trainer Lee Freedman.

Box Stallion is a joint venture combining the skills and resources of two families; The Gillies and The Zerbe's. The first vines were planted in 1996, however in the interests on gaining some vineyard maturity, 2001 was the year of first wine production. In that short time, Box Stallion has already gained recognition for its wines and winemaking in state and national wine shows and through favourable reviews.

Two bays and Bass Straight bound The Mornington Peninsula, in the most southeastern part of mainland Australia. The Box Stallion vineyards, positioned in the middle of this region enjoy a maritime climate with long gentle summers and good ripening weather extending as late as May. The rolling hills with good northerly exposure produce low yields of high quality fruit, which is then lovingly processed to become distinctive, cool climate wines of exceptional bouquet and pallet.
