Heathcote Winery Curagee Shiraz 2005

Curagee Shiraz is a single vineyard wine, harvested from the old vines at 'Newlans Lane' and aged in French oak barrels. The grapes were hand harvested at optimum ripeness – when the sugar and acid levels were balanced, fruit flavours were intense and complex, and the tannins were subtle and ripe. Once the grapes were received into the winery, they were hand destemmed into small open fermentors. Hand destemming ensures only the ripe berries on each bunch are removed, and the process is very gentle to ensure we retain maximum fruit condition. Post fermentation maceration (leaving the wine on the skins after fermentation has finished) was allowed to ensure that the tannins were structurally sound before pressing occurred. The wine was pressed using our basket press, left to settle before being racked (decanted) into French oak barrels. The wine was aged in oak for a period of up to 17 months before being blended and bottled.

Curagee Shiraz is co-fermented with 3% Viognier , initially to add complexity to the aroma and flavours of the wine, but more importantly to add length and structure as the wine ages. This along with the tannin structure suggests the wine can age in the mid to long term.

The wine has aromas of ripe plums, black currents, spice, mineral tones and oak. The palate is rich and persistent. The viognier lends apricots on the palate initially, with the Shiraz flavours of black plums, complex spice and black berry fruit lingering. Tannins are fine, gripping and balanced.

French Oak used: Seguin Moreau, Saury, Francois Freres, Billion 65% new oak

The previous 2004 vintage was given a rating of 94 by James Halliday in the 2006 Australian Wine Companion and a rating of 95 from Jeremy Oliver in the 2007 Australian Wine Annual.

Heathcote Winery

 Heathcote WInery

Heathcote Winery was established in 1978 and was one of the first commercial wineries in Heathcote.  The building dates back to 1854 when Thomas Craven established "Craven's Stores" to cater for the produce needs of the huge influx of gold miners seeking their fortune in the heady gold rush days.

Craven, an entrepreneurial type, also ran a coach service (depicted in our logo) from stables behind the Cellar door, deliverying supplies and mail around Central Victoria, hence the signifcance of the "Mail Coach" range.

In 1997 the Winery was purchased by an independent group of wine enthusiasts led by Stephen Wilkins. Stephen and his partners share a passionate commitment ot produce wines reflective of the Heathcote Region but distrinctly Heathcote Winery.  The wines attest to this commitment, delivering concentrated fruit aromas and flavours and intense colour, but with a finishing elegance ehanced by splashes of viognier.

Uniquely positioned in the main street of Heathcote, Heathcote Winery holds a surprise for many of its visitors. The Cellar Door and adjacent Art Gallery are situated in the main street of Heathcote.

Few would then expect to find a fully functioning winery directly behind the Cellar Door!!

The winery produced its first vintage in 1983 and now specialises in the production of shiraz and viognier reflective of the Heathcote Region but distinctly Heathcote Winery. Shiraz is the cornerstone of Heathcote Winery's premium wine production.

Visitors to cellar door enjoy free wine tasting's and a range of locally produced foods, or may simply stroll through our Art Gallery featuring exhibitions by regional artists. Our courtyard offers free BBQ facilities and is a great place to unwind with a glass of wine or your favourite coffee.

Functions can be catered for in both the Art Gallery and courtyard.
