Sutherland Estate Wildcat Unwooded Chardonnay 2004

2004 represented a terrific growing season for Sutherland Estate, particularly for the Chardonnay.

Our unwooded Chardonnay exhibits a fragrant nose of lychees, honeysuckle and lavender, followed by a lively and crisp acid palate with gentle peach and melon flavours.

Winery Info

Sutherland Estate

Sutherland Estate is a family-owned, boutique enterprise. We have endeavoured to make the smallest footprint on our land. Our property consists of 110 acres, most of which is undisturbed native bushland. The large hill on the northern side of the property, upon which our cellar door is built, is known as Daniels Hill.

We have four small, separate vineyard blocks totalling about ten acres. Our original block (D block) was planted over a decade ago to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. There has been further plantings of these four varieties since then, together with two parcels of Tempranillo and Gewurztraminer.

The Yarra Valley traditionally enjoys the bulk of its annual rainfall in winter and spring. Accordingly all blocks have dripper lines, and irrigation is (sparingly) provided, as needed, during summer. We do not have mains or town water - our water needs are meet from a number of dams around the property.

Vineyard management includes hand pruning, bunch thinning and/or leaf plucking (if needed) and early morning hand picking.
