Map of the Yarra Valley

Yarra Valley

The Yarra Valley is Victoria's oldest vineyard region and is located just 50km (one hours drive) to the East of Melbourne's CBD.

The topography is as varied as that of any wine region in Australia. It ranges from river flats or terraces through to some of the steepest slopes to be found in the country.

The Yarra Valley encompasses a wide range of soil types from sandy loams to clay loams frequently impregnated with shale in the middle section to red volcanic soil in the both the Upper and Lower sections.

The Yarra Valley is cool in relation to the rest of Australia's viticultural regions. The majority of the rainfall is in winter and spring, with the summer relatively cool, dry and humid. There is limited maritime influence. The small diurnal temperature range reflects the proximity of the sea.

The Yarra Valley is one of the finest cool climate wine regions in Australia specialising in sparkling wines, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz.

Other varieties planted include Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Semillon, Marsanne, Riesling and Verduzzo.

Harvest Time: Late March to late May.

Vintage Report for 2005

In the words of winemaker Rob “Sticks” Dolan, 2005 in the Yarra Valley was ‘Phenomenal—a cracker of a year for red and white. We couldn’t have wished for a better season.’

2005 in the Yarra Valley will be remembered as an outstanding vintage of two distinctive climatic halves. Spring was cool and mild with adequate rainfall, minimising the need for irrigation. A record rainfall for one day in early February had growers wondering, as the season was already one to two weeks behind. Luckily, the season was subsequently dry and mild—ideal harvest conditions. The warm days and cool nights allowed excellent flavour development in both whites and reds and pleasing colour accumulation in reds. Most vineyards finished harvest by Anzac Day, with higher-than-average sugar levels and exceptional acid balance.

Yields were slightly down on last year’s bumper crop but right on average across the board, with the exception of Pinot Noir—down by about 15 per cent on average.
